Interpreting Scripture in Context

Dr. Eric J. Bargerhuff, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, Professor of Bible and Theology, Director, Honors Program at Trinity College of Florida

When the Bible is interpreted properly, it is a life-giving book, but taken out of context, it can be confusing, misleading, and dangerous. A need for Christians to be taught how to interpret the Bible in its own context and applied appropriately stands at the heart of what it means to be a God-glorifying, Christ-exalting individual.

This program is offered FREE for C3TB members and guests and is limited to the first 100 registrants.

Born in rural Indiana as the last of three children, Eric was raised in a Christian home and received Christ at an early age (8). He was very active in his youth group, high school athletics, music, and was the editor-in-chief of his high school newspaper.

In college in Ohio, Eric received a call by God to pursue a preaching and teaching ministry and subsequently began serving as a pastor while he completed his Master of Divinity degree with honors. He was ordained in 1996 and is now currently ordained in the Southern Baptist Church (SBC). After completing a season of ministry in a rural congregation in Illinois, he went on to complete his Ph.D. in Systematic Theology at one of the largest and most prestigious evangelical universities in the United States (Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) while studying under leading evangelical theologians, Dr. Wayne Grudem and Dr. Kevin J. Vanhoozer.

In the academic setting, he has taught seminary level courses in Kazakhstan, Japan, and Guatemala and currently teaches at the collegiate level in Florida. His present role is that of Associate Academic Dean and Professor of Bible and Theology at Trinity College of Florida where he also serves as Director of the Honors Program. He further serves as an Adjunct Faculty member for Shepherds Theological Seminary in North Carolina. Eric is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and served as a Fellow in the Center for Pastor Theologians for ten years.

Having served in various roles of pastoral ministry for over twenty years, Eric has a passion for the local church and is interested in preaching, teaching, counseling, pastoral care, writing, discipleship, and grief ministry. He is gifted in speaking and has written four books, the most prominent of which is entitled The Most Misused Verses in the Bible by Bethany House Publishers, which has now sold over 40,000 copies. He serves as a consultant to churches in matters of church discipline, which was the subject matter of his doctoral dissertation and first publication.

Eric is married to his wife Jennifer and has two sons, Joshua age 16, and Andrew, age 13 and is interested in the outdoor life (biking, gardening, golfing) and cooking. They live in Trinity, Florida.
